Statin Use Recommendation in Cardiovascular Risk Management Is Controversial

The cohort study by Bezin et al1 highlights the cardiovascular risk (CVR)-specific benefits of statin in the elderly. We strongly agree with the conclusions of Bezin et al1; however, in the use of statin in CVR management, the associated benefits and risk outcomes are profoundly controversial. A post hoc secondary analysis of data from the ALLAHAT-LLT randomized clinical trial reports no significant difference in reduction in all-cause mortalities between pravastatin (N=1467) and usual care (N=1400) groups of elderly patients with moderate hyperlipidemia and hypertension.
