High-energy lasers could be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease in the future

The aggregation of amyloid protein fibrils is involved in diseases such as amyloidosis and even Alzheimer’s. Thus, dissociation of these amyloid fibrils is crucial from a biological perspective. However, because of their rigid, stacked sheet-like structure, their dissociation is difficult. A group of scientists has explored the use of free-electron laser to break down these aggregates. This technique could be used for treatment of diseases that involve amyloid protein aggregation.
